As a student enrolled in an online Masters in Fine Arts my days are filled with painting and art. My spring semester studies are a month in. I was taking two challenging classes: Figurative Painting and Renaissance Art (art history), but realised that I was putting undue stress on myself. I do sometimes take on a bit too much. I’m learning and loving learning, but at times I debate whether I’ve got what it takes to complete the courses well, be present for the kids and family, as well as engage in my other activities and classes outside the art program, including a new poetry book, a writing course, Thai language class and so on…
It became time to discern how much was too much and what was creating strain on my system, more than I could handle. Maybe some of you can relate to this.
I decided to drop my art history class for the time being, so as to better manage all other expectations and my mental health. Most of my activities are set up to go at my own pace except the masters classes. Since I’m in no hurry to complete the program, it made sense to drop one of the classes. With this shift I feel a huge sense of relief.
